Halloween – October 31st 2020

October 30, 2020

Trick or Treat! Today is Halloween also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve is a celebration observed on the eve of All Saints Day. The origins of Halloween can be disputed. Some people believe that Halloween originally came from Samhain which is the Celtic pagan festival meaning Summers End. This celebrated the end of harvest season. Gaels believed Halloween was a time when the walls between our world and the next were at their thinnest allowing spirits to pass through.

In the 16th century in Scotland, Ireland, and Wales people would go door to door hoping to receive food. This was done in exchange for a poem or song. The phrase trick or treat was first used in America in 1927.

Dressing up for Halloween was started by Celts who wore white with blackened faces during the festival of Samhain. In Victorian times costumes became more adventurous and this is when they took on gothic influences.

However you choose to celebrate Halloween have fun!
